Unawatuna Hotels: Where to Stay on the Famous Beach Bay

The beach curves for about a kilometer beneath Rumassala hill, protected from the worst of the swell, which is why Unawatuna swims better than most of the open south coast. In the December to April season the water is calm, warm and busy with a friendly mix of travelers and local families, especially on weekends.

Beyond the main bay hide the side attractions: Jungle Beach's small coves on the Rumassala side, the white Japanese Peace Pagoda on the headland, and Dalawella's palm swing a short ride east.

The range is the south coast's widest: beachfront hotels and cabana setups on or just behind the sand, a dense belt of guesthouses and small hotels in the lanes behind, and boutique and villa options on the quieter edges. Prices sit below the Fort and above Hikkaduwa.

Location within Unawatuna matters: the central beach strip is lively into the evening, while the ends of the bay and the lanes inland are markedly calmer. Light sleepers should ask exactly where a property sits.

First-time visitors who want the beach with restaurants and services at hand, groups mixing swimmers and loungers, families in season thanks to the sheltered water, and anyone pairing beach days with Fort evenings. Travelers after silence should look 4 kilometers east to Thalpe and Dalawella.

From Galle Fort or the station it is about 6 kilometers, 15 to 20 minutes by tuk-tuk, and coastal buses stop on the main road a short walk from the beach. Within Unawatuna everything is walkable; tuk-tuks cover Jungle Beach, Dalawella and the Fort.

Galle Fort is 15 to 20 minutes west. Jungle Beach and the Peace Pagoda sit on the Rumassala headland at the bay's western end. Eastward, the coast runs through Dalawella and Thalpe's villa beaches toward Koggala and the Ahangama surf stretch.
