Getting here well
From Colombo, take the expressway bus or a car for speed, or the coastal train for the experience: right-side seats going south hug the sea. From the airport, the expressway link makes Galle about 2 hours door to door. Book season-time trains a little ahead where reserved classes exist.
Money and daily logistics
ATMs and banks cluster in Galle Town with more along the Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa roads; cards work in the Fort's hotels and better restaurants, while tuk-tuks and beach shacks run on cash. Agree tuk-tuk fares before riding, or use the metered apps that operate in the area.
Sea sense on the south coast
In season the sheltered bays are gentle, but this remains an ocean coast: currents shift with the monsoon, and lifeguard coverage is patchy. Swim where locals and hotels indicate, treat May to November seas with respect, and never judge the water by yesterday.
Fort etiquette and wildlife manners
The Fort is a living town, not a theme park: people reside, worship and school inside the walls, so dress reasonably away from the beach and ask before photographing residents. On the turtle beaches, distance is the rule; skip any operator or crowd that touches, feeds or corners the animals, and give the stilt fishermen their courtesy fee if you shoot them.

The expressway bus or a car is faster at 1.5 to 2 hours; the coastal train is slower but famously scenic. Many travelers take the train one way for the experience.
Do you need a scooter or tuk-tuk in Galle?
Within the Fort, no, everything is on foot. For the beaches and the coast, tuk-tuks cover everything, and a scooter helps for the spread-out Ahangama stretch.
Is Galle safe for swimming?
In season, at the sheltered bays, generally yes with daily judgment. Outside December to April the seas roughen, so ask locally and respect conditions.
