The geography is compact: Galle Town wraps the harbor with the station and buses; the Fort occupies the promontory beside it; Unawatuna's bay lies 6 kilometers east, flowing into the Thalpe and Dalawella villa coast and then the Ahangama surf stretch; Hikkaduwa anchors the coast 19 kilometers northwest. Nothing on this list is more than 40 minutes from the Fort gates.

December to April is the season: dry days, calm seas, everything open, prices at their peak with Christmas to New Year the extreme. May to November is monsoon-influenced: showers, rougher seas, real discounts. The Fort shines year-round, which makes Galle the south coast's best wet-season base; the beach trips are simply better in season.

From Colombo, the Southern Expressway delivers Galle in 1.5 to 2 hours by car or express bus, about 125 kilometers. The coastal railway takes 2 to 2.5 hours and earns its fame, running within spray distance of the sea. From the airport, plan about 150 kilometers and 2 hours via the expressway link.
