Unawatuna
The all-rounder: a sheltered horseshoe bay with calm season swimming, restaurants on the sand and every service at hand. Busy at its center in season, calmer at its ends. If you pick one beach for one trip, this is the safe answer.
Jungle Beach and the Peace Pagoda
Two small coves tucked into the Rumassala headland at Unawatuna's western end, reached by jungle path. Calm, snorkel-friendly water in season and a proper hideaway feel if you arrive early. The white Peace Pagoda above adds the viewpoint.
Dalawella and Thalpe
The quiet beauty: reef-protected sand where turtles graze the shallows, the famous palm swing leans over the beach, and villa walls keep the crowds thin. The best swimming-plus-serenity combination on this coast, and the family favorite.
Ahangama
The surf coast: a string of reef and beach breaks with a café scene attached, plus the stilt fishermen at dawn. Swimming is spot-dependent; the point here is waves and the slow-living rhythm around them.
Hikkaduwa
The classic: kilometers of golden sand, a coral sanctuary where snorkelers meet sea turtles, surf points at the southern end and the friendliest beachfront prices near Galle. Livelier and more worn than the villa coast, and proud of it.
