The season at a glance
December to April is the season: dry, sunny, calm seas, whales off Mirissa, everything open. Christmas to New Year is the extreme peak for prices and crowds; January to March offers the same weather with slightly more room to breathe. April closes the window with rising heat.
The monsoon months, honestly
From roughly May to September the southwest monsoon brings showers, humidity and rougher seas; October and November are transitional with afternoon downpours. Beaches still have good hours, but swimming asks daily judgment and some beach businesses slow down. Prices drop meaningfully everywhere except the Fort.
Month by month, briefly
December: season opens, festive peak at the end. January to March: prime, dry and calm. April: hot close of season. May to September: monsoon-influenced, quiet, discounted. October to November: transitional showers, improving late, good value for flexible travelers.
Choosing your window
Beach-first trips: December to April, with January to March the sweet spot. Whale watching: the same window. Fort-and-culture trips: any month works, and the wet season gives you the ramparts half to yourself. Budget travelers get the best coast-wide value from May to November.
